If you give a mom a minute in the morning, she will notice her basket of over-ripe bananas and decide to make muffins.
So, she will turn on the computer to get the recipe. The computer will not have an internet connection, so the mom will mess with the computer for a while before deciding she will need to go upstairs to reset the modem.
Since the mom is going upstairs she will decide to bring some trash bags for the bathrooms with her. When she steps into the kids' bathroom, she will realize she is in a puddle, and will have to get down and clean it up. While she's down there she will decide the toilet needs a cleaning as well. Then, when she stands up to wash her hands, she will realize the sink is dirty, and wipe that too.
Now the mom will not know why she is upstairs for a minute, but still has bags to put in her bathroom. When she gets to her room, she will realize she was going to reset the modem, and does it. By the time she gets downstairs again, it will be later than the mom expected to start making breakfast, so she will decide to time herself making the muffins, and go super-speed.
Right after the mom gets out the ingredients, two little boys will come inside from playing and say, "We decided to help you." The boys will help her, resulting in honey all over the counter and floor, egg shells in divers places, and a tussle about who will lick the bowl.
Finally the muffins will be done, and they will be delicious. Everyone will love them, and they will all forget about the mess that will be mostly cleaned up by the time they eat. When breakfast is over, the mom will start getting out ingredients for a salad she has to make that night, and will notice another bag of chopped pecans in the cupboard. And you know if the mom finds chopped pecans, she will have to make some banana muffins to go under them . . .
This stuff happens constantly, and many times with much more awful components, but this time I was amused enough with the parallel to the "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" books I wrote it down.

Brilliant
This is awesome.
I am just impressed the mom made the muffins. DId she ever clean up the mess?
Don't underestimate the power of an Emily-craving, especially when there is nothing on the schedule for the day. Muffins made, cleaned up, and eaten by 9:10. I'm used to crazy chaos blowing up around me, so if I get a minute . . .
You are incredible. You cook way too much wonderful food.
Just enough to keep us alive.
You are very creative and patient! :)
Haha--cute post. And isn't it so true!!
The part that is most impressive to me is that you got all of that done by 9:10 INCLUDING all the tangents.
